Project Description:

Carley Rickles will travel to Germany to begin her project titled:  Landscapes of Collective Trauma. Through field research, she plans to document post-industrial landscapes, memorials, and monuments associated with culturally and environmentally traumatic events. Germany is a country dedicated to reconciling its social trauma through integrated spatial interventions. It has made progressive strides in creating places of transparent memory whether they are treated as large scale memorials (like the Memorial of Murdered Jews of Europe), post-industrial parks (such as Nature Park Schöneberger Südgelände), or streetscape memorials (Stolpersteines) that are built into the pavement and scattered throughout Berlin. Rickles plans to document sites through writing, drawing, photography, and mapping applications. From her field research documentation, Rickles will consider how empathetic spaces could be translated into cultural southern landscapes and interventions that emanate justice and transparency. After her trip, she plans to assemble a publication and associated exhibition that shares her observations and forms inferences about how these spaces translate into everyday life.
