Cheshire Bridge is burning. In March of 2021, four Asian women were murdered in what is now known as the Atlanta spa shootings. Then, an unidentified arsonist set the namesake “Cheshire Bridge” on fire (twice), literally splitting the street in half. This has increased the tensions between the residents of the street and the surrounding affluent neighborhoods, making anyone who looks “suspicious” a target for blame. In addition, gentrification has continued its fast march as apartments are built and businesses close. “My Light in A Dark Place” is a project recording the street amidst the fire. Artist Jackson Markovic’s documents from the street, primarily in the form of photographs, challenge the notion to “clean up” the area. Markovic plans to use the Idea Capital Grant to provide hotel rooms for several of the street’s residents and produce a show which will take place on the street in Fall of 2022.
