Using contemporary ballet, technology-art, and mathematical concepts, Thulani Vereen’s The Permutations of Humanity explores what it means to be human and the permutations of such experiences on the spectrum of humanity from the individual to collective level. The 5 artists featured in the work execute an athletic mix of contemporary ballet and modern techniques as a vehicle to embody a set amount of human experiences that combine, collide, and exist to encapsulate the pursuit of understood human behavior. Believing in the shared experience amongst all forms of life, Vereen has studied concepts such as collective behavior in groups of animals as a source of influence for the intricate formations displayed in the work. The formations that live in the work, partner with the movement to take the viewer on a journey that seeks to answer the guiding question: what are the permutations of humanity. Computer scientist by trade, Vereen uses physical computing as another element to aid the expression of this journey. The work will premiere live at the Georgia Tech Ferst Center for the Arts in conjunction with Dance Canvas’ Choreographer Career Development Initiative the last weekend of March.
